On September 11, my daughter and son-in-law were expecting their first child. Among our first thoughts when we heard of the terrible events in New York and Washington, DC, was tremendous concern regarding the world into which this baby would soon be born. A few days after the tragedy, the families of both prospective parents gathered around them to hold a blessing ceremony for them and the expected child, as well as for all the parents and children the world over. That is when I realized that my pregnant daughter was a metaphor for our wonderful, courageous country and the people in it. Although shocked and horrified by the events, she continued to be full of hope and joy, mingled with an awareness of the necessity to persevere and overcome for the sake of the child and the future. |
