Nedra Newby, untitled photograph

I am a StudioScape artist who lost my studio in the World Trade Center on September 11.  My loss was small compared to what others suffered.  I chose the butterfly as a memorial to the WTC and the brave people who died in the tragedy.

Since Antiquity the butterfly has represented the human soul because of its beauty and its metamorphoses.  The butterfly emerging from the chrysalis stood for the soul leaving the body at death.  The soul is freed from its covering of flesh.  It is born again and becomes something more beautiful.  In Christian Art the butterfly  is a symbol of the resurrected human soul in the hand of Christ.
